COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—The overall crime rate in Colorado Springs was down nearly 9 percent last year, but the number of homicides and rapes rose.

Police said Tuesday that robberies, aggravated assaults, vehicle thefts, other thefts and burglaries all declined.

But homicides rose from 17 in 2006 to 28 last year, and rapes rose 11 percent, to 285 last year.

Police Lt. Skip Arms says homicide numbers tend to fluctuate from year to year, making it difficult to spot meaningful trends.
