Last Friday, Class 5A Chaparral of the Continental League honored baseball coach Steve Eaton by unveiling a new scoreboard with his name on it. The longtime coach knew it was coming. What he didn’t know was that the school, parents, boosters and players also decided to name the Wolverines’ field after him. Eaton, who spent considerable time in multiple sports and weight-training at Aurora Central and Gateway, will be retiring after the season. It is the second big-school baseball field named for his family. Eaton lost a young son, J.R., to disease while at Gateway, and the Olympians’ diamond in Aurora is the J.R. Eaton Memorial Field.
