Mason Finley’s first meet of the season was historic as he obliterated Colorado’s discus mark.

A transfer from Salida now at Buena Vista, he turned in a throw of 202 feet, 10 inches Saturday at the Eagle Invitational in Gypsum.

Finley, a 6-foot-8, 330-pound junior, became the first in-state schoolboy to surpass 200 feet and outdistanced the previous all-time best throw of 197 feet by Fairview’s Mike Call in 1978. It was more than 10 feet better than the state-meet record of Westminster’s Todd Austin, who threw 192-5 in 1977.

“It came together,” Finley said. “I had been hitting the 190s in practice.

“Conditions weren’t that great. It was pretty cold and it had started snowing. And I’ve been working hard on my technique year-round.”

Finley next will compete Saturday at the Air Force Academy.
