Former Colorado State basketball star and WNBA all-star Becky Hammon will play for Russia at the Beijing Olympics.

The San Antonio Silver Stars guard also plays professionally in Russia. She is not among the 29 U.S. players hoping to make the 12-player Olympic roster.

Hammon twice played for USA Basketball teams, in the Jones Cup before her senior year at CSU and as recently as 2006 on a national team European tour.

Those competitions were not enough to exclude her from playing for another country under the FIBA rules. USA Basketball assistant executive director for communications Craig Miller explained in an e-mail Wednesday “FIBA would not consider the Jones Cup as a ‘main official competition of FIBA.’ ” Under FIBA rules, once a player participates for a nation in a major FIBA competition, he or she may not compete for the national team of another nation.
