DENVER—The leader of a mariachi band accused of pistol whipping a guitarist who wanted to quit the group plead guilty to felony menacing.

Alvaro Alvarado-Amarias faces up to three years in jail when he is sentenced in May. The 32-year-old entered the guilty plea Wednesday in Denver District Court. The charge stemmed from an incident in which Amarias allegedly held a band member at gunpoint for five hours, fired off a gun, and hit him with it.

Amarias goes by the stage name “Fidel Berrelleza.”

Prosecutors dropped charges of assault and false imprisonment in exchange for his guilty plea.
