The midrange level of baseball offerings on Saturday are awesome. Starting up north, recent CHSAA Hall of Fame inductee Jim Danley and his top-ranked Eaton Reds host No. 3 Holy Family at noon. Holy Family will keep a close eye on its Metropolitan League brethren Bishop Machebeuf and Faith Christian, neither of which has lost a game in league play, and in the case of the Buffs, at all. A double-header gets underway at 2 p.m. in Arvada.
GIRLS SOCCER
Give me Liberty. That will be the battle cry for Greeley West head coach Mike Lordeman and his Spartans, who have righted the ship after an 0-2 start. A tough nonleague match at Liberty, ranked No. 4 in the latest Denver Post Class 4A soccer poll, will be a good measuring stick. The Lancers, under the direction of coach Mike Goyden, hope for a better result this Saturday than last, when they were lambasted by Grandview, Class 5A’s top squad, 6-1.
TRACK AND FIELD
This one’s gonna be big. It’s the one we’ve all been waiting for. Saturday’s Runners’ Roost at Mullen will have some of the best on hand, including Overland speedster Jeremy Rankin. The reigning big-school 100-meter champion is not only the fastest Coloradan, his 10.32 in the 100 is the fastest in the country. Also scheduled to compete is Longmont’s Matt Butcher, Class 4A’s defending 200 and 400 champion. A Rankin-Butcher duel in the 200 could be fun to watch. There will be no team scores kept, and the action gets underway at 8 a.m. at De La Salle Stadium. It’s going to be a long day outside, so bring the sunscreen.
GIRLS TENNIS
Busy week at Mullen. In addition to the aforementioned track meet at Mullen, the Mustangs will host their annual girls tennis tournament. Defending Class 4A champion Cheyenne Mountain will get an early glimpse of what it will take to repeat the feat. It’s a big weekend for invitationals, including: Air Academy, Eaglecrest, Pueblo County and Delta. All are weather permitting.
