Emily Waner, left, chose to to play basketball at the University of Colorado and Duke. Now, Michael Cooper has chosen her. Waner, who starred at Class 5A ThunderRidge in Highlands Ranch, has been invited to this weekend’s tryout camp for the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks. Cooper, the former NBA Lakers stalwart now heading the Sparks, telephoned Waner, a call she has been waiting for since lacing up her first pair of sneakers. “I was floored and very excited,” Waner said. “I’m honored. I had no idea this was coming.” Waner, who will graduate from Duke next month and eventually head into pre-med, says she can’t wait to face professionals. “I’m going to just go play,” she said.
