GRAND JUNCTION—A Mesa County woman is apologizing for lying to coworkers — saying her son was dying of leukemia — because she wanted some time off work.

Yolanda Netherlin wrote an open letter to Mesa County citizens as part of her probation.

Her story about her son prompted her coworkers at Burger King to launch a fundraising campaign, which was publicized by Grand Junction-area media outlets.

The effort raised $2,000 in a matter of days.

Netherlin wrote that she “never wanted to hurt anyone” and “never wanted to get anything out of it.” She said she just wanted some time off to spend with family, but didn’t want to lose her job.

Burger King has reimbursed the donations they could track, and donated the rest to children at St. Mary’s Hospital.
