DENVER—State lawmakers want to keep state colleges and universities from hiking fees without students’ permission.

Budget committee members decided to leave a provision in the proposed state budget requiring a student vote on any proposed increase. It says a majority of students voting would have to approve an extra fee to pay for raises for professors or for building projects.

The provision is part of the $17.6 billion budget bill readopted by the Senate on Thursday. The House was expected to vote later in the day.

Sen. Steve Johnson of Fort Collins says the Joint Budget Committee wanted to make sure all students are asked about possible increases, not just members of student government.
