The Colorado Springs Sky Sox split a doubleheader against the visiting Tacoma Rainiers on Sunday, nearly getting a no-hitter from Jose Capellan in the nightcap.
The Sky Sox (6-5) lost the first game 11-7, as starter Greg Reynolds (0-1) allowed seven runs on 11 hits. Edwin Bellorin, Sean Barker and Seth Smith each had two RBIs for the Sky Sox.
In the second game, Capellan came within three outs of the first solo no-hitter in Sky Sox history. Tacoma’s Jeff Clement led off the seventh with a home run off Capellan (1-0), breaking up his no-hit bid. Capellan left the game after giving up the homer, and Josh Newman pitched a scoreless inning for a 6-1 win.
Eagles shut out Brahmas.
The Colorado Eagles defeated the Texas Brahmas 2-0 in Loveland, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the Northern Conference finals.
Goaltender Sebastien Laplante led the way for Colorado, making 35 saves for his third shutout of the postseason.
Ed McGrane scored first for the Eagles, his fourth goal in the playoffs; and Scott Polaski scored the game-winner.
The Eagles head to North Richland Hills, Texas, for Game 3 on Wednesday.
CU golfers win again.
The University of Colorado men’s golf team won its second tournament in the last month, shooting a three-round total of 900 at the Ohio State-Robert Kepler Intercollegiate in Columbus, Ohio.
Coupled with their victory in the Louisiana Classics, it is only the second time the Buffaloes have won two major tournaments in the same year.
ThunderRidge High School graduate Luke Symons led the Buffaloes. Symons closed with a 1-over-par 72 for a total of 9-over 222 to tie for second place — his best collegiate finish. It also was the best finish by a Buffs golfer since 2005.
• At the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., University of Denver golfer Espen Kof- stad won his first career tournament, shooting a 3-under 210.
Kofstad, who entered Sunday’s final round tied for 14th, beat Colorado State’s Riley Arp, who tied for third with a three-round total of 212.
