NEW YORK — J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, is expected to be on the witness stand in a Manhattan federal courtroom today, testifying against a small publisher looking to bring out an encyclopedia based on her work.

When RDR Books, a publisher in Muskegon, Mich., announced last fall it was planning to publish a print version of a popular fan website called “The Harry Potter Lexicon” (hp-lexicon.org), Rowling and Warner Brothers, the movie studio that has adapted her books, balked.
