Getting your player ready...

At 8:11 p.m., Padres fans weren’t about to let the author of “The Slide” slip away that easily. They greeted Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday with boos. But like its last game against the Rockies, San Diego was lacking. The jeers weren’t loud, only half-hearted. Holliday, who said he wasn’t worried about heckling, struck out in his first two at-bats.

Before the game, San Diego manager Bud Black was asked if Holliday had touched the plate yet.

“I heard they do a commercial (back in Denver) where he says he did. I defer to him,” Black said.

Honoring Robinson.

First-base coach Glenallen Hill joined Willy Taveras, Yorvit Torrealba and Matt Herges as Rockies wearing No. 42 to honor Jackie Robinson breaking major-league baseball’s color barrier. Last year, LaTroy Hawkins wore No. 42 for the Rockies. He wore No. 21 on Tuesday to honor Roberto Clemente, and will switch to No. 22 permanently to end a squabble over No. 21 which Yankees’ fans want out of circulation out of respect for Paul O’Neill.
