Rural landowners would be able to team up to deliver renewable energy — from wind, solar and hydroelectric power — to the grid under a system being put together by the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union, among other groups.

Leland Swenson, the farmers union’s executive director, said Tuesday that the groups are talking about creating a “clean-energy cooperative” to help rural landowners overcome the regulatory and financial hurdles that can keep them from accessing the broader energy market.

“If the state’s going to have a true new energy economy,” Swenson said later, invoking a favorite phrase of Gov. Bill Ritter’s, “we want to make sure everybody has an opportunity to participate. . . . Why not the landowners and the local communities?” John Ingold, The Denver Post
