PHILADELPHIA — Sen. Arlen Specter has been diagnosed with an early recurrence of the lymphatic cancer known as Hodgkin’s disease, he announced Tuesday afternoon.

The Republican senator from Pennsylvania, who began treatment for the disease three years ago, said the recurrence was found during a routine follow-up scan.

He now will receive weekly chemotherapy for the next 12 weeks. He said that he expected to be able to continue to perform his senatorial duties.
