COLORADO SPRINGS — It may have come by way of general delivery, but Cory Sullivan looks at his World Series ring as if it came right out of the jeweler’s case.
It did, except Sullivan received his cherished reminder of the Rockies’ memorable run to the World Series in a Colorado Springs Sky Sox uniform about a week after the reigning National League champions received their rings before a packed house at Coors Field.
“You want to be there with the rest of the guys,” Sullivan said Tuesday before the Sky Sox played. “Everyone here who got a ring felt like they had a hand in it. Just to get it is an honor; where you get it really doesn’t matter.”
Sullivan is making the best of the early season with the Sky Sox after losing his roster spot to newcomer Scott Podsednik during spring training.
“I was a little disappointed last year to be down here, but this year I’m more prepared and understanding about the situation,” he said. “It still was a little difficult. You hope they look at what you’ve done in the past.”
The Rockies were interested in keeping Sullivan in the organization, paying him his major-league salary to play in Triple-A. “If there is a silver lining, (and) I’m not sure there is, that would be it,” he said.
Sullivan is hitting .280 with the Sky Sox, with five RBIs. He has his ring in a safety deposit box, but he believes he will wear it into Coors Field before the season is over. So does Sky Sox manager Tom Runnells.
“He’s concerned with how he’s playing and how the team is doing,” Runnells said. “He’s showed he’s here to get better. I can’t believe he won’t be up there, probably earlier than later.”
