State sitting pretty for renewable energy, panel says
Colorado has ample opportunity to develop clean power, according to a report presented to a legislative committee Tuesday morning.
The Task Force on Renewable Resource Generation Development Areas report says Colorado has the potential for 96 gigawatts of wind power generation, mostly on the Eastern Plains. Putting large-scale solar projects on 2 percent of the land in the San Luis Valley and in southeastern Colorado could create another 26 gigawatts of generation, according to the report. For comparison, Colorado’s power consumption maxes out at about 11 gigawatts during the height of the summer, said Morey Wolfson of the Governor’s Energy Office.
Targeting immigrant plea deals.
A Republican state senator wants to amend the Colorado Constitution to bar plea deals that could allow illegal immigrants to avoid deportation, taking a swipe at Democratic Gov. Bill Ritter for a plea deal he made when he was Denver district attorney.
The measure from Sen. Ted Harvey of Highlands Ranch, which was released Tuesday, would ask voters to approve a constitutional ban on guilty pleas to charges of trespassing on agricultural land or any other charge that may allow suspects to avoid deportation.
