University of Colorado athletic director Mike Bohn and women’s basketball coach Kathy McConnell-Miller agreed in principle to a contract extension late Wednesday, a day after she interviewed for the UCLA job.
“My family and I are looking forward to continuing to build Colorado women’s basketball and to make CU fans proud,” McConnell-Miller said in a statement issued through the CU athletic department. “We remain excited to be Buffs.”
McConnell-Miller, 41-53 in three years at CU including 19-15 in the 2007-08 season, interviewed on campus Tuesday with UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero.
McConnell-Miller has two years remaining on her initial five-year contract, worth about $350,000 annually. She guided Colorado to the semifinals of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament last season.
“We have been reviewing Kathy’s contract for some time; this just came up on sort of a parallel track,” Bohn said Wednesday night, referring to UCLA’s overtures. “She’s one of the bright, up-and-coming coaches in the country. She’s committed to us and we’re committed to her. We’re excited.”
McConnell-Miller was believed to be one of two UCLA finalists. Guerrero interviewed Tennessee assistant coach Nikki Caldwell on Wednesday.
