The illness that sickened 63 University of Denver students has been identified as a norovirus causing stomach flu.

The students reported symptoms including stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea during a four-day period beginning Sunday. The virus is spread by direct contact with contaminated surfaces, people, food or other objects. It is not spread through coughing or sneezing. Symptoms generally pass within 12 to 36 hours.

Most of the students reside in Centennial Halls on campus. The complex, which houses 625 students, includes a kitchen and dining areas. Health and school officials found no safety issues at Centennial Halls, and the kitchen and dining areas have remained open.

On Wednesday, officials at the Denver health department declared the University of Denver campus safe for its more than 11,000 students.
