In the past five years, 402 motorcycle riders and their passengers have been killed in crashes on Colorado roads, prompting highway safety officials to launch a campaign Wednesday to promote rider-training classes and helmet use.
Motorcycle fatalities in the state jumped from 45 in 1995 to a record 90 last year, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. Alcohol was a factor in 35 percent of fatal crashes, and 80 percent of riders were not wearing helmets or they were using them improperly, CDOT said.
The agency has started a new website, , with information on motorcycle operator safety-training programs and other safety tips.
