DENVER—Democrat Mark Udall raised $1.45 million during the first quarter for his U.S. Senate bid, topping campaign contributions of $1.02 million raised by rival Republican Bob Schaffer.

The contributions put Udall’s cash on hand at $4.2 million, which was nearly twice as much as Schaffer’s $2.2 million campaign fund, according to campaign finance reports filed Tuesday.

About $250,000 of Udall’s total was raised by political action committees. He spent nearly $850,000 on fundraising consultants, telemarketing costs, brochures and direct mail.

Schaffer’s campaign received $110,587 from political committees during the quarter and another $379,019 from committee transfers.

Former U.S. Rep. Schaffer and Udall, a Boulder congressman, are campaigning to replace Republican Wayne Allard, who is retiring.

In the 2nd Congressional District Democratic race, Internet entrepreneur Jared Polis gave his campaign about $400,000 this week, for a total of more than $1 million in self-funding to date. During the first quarter, he raised $158,910 and gave his campaign $397,340. His cash on hand was $353,731.

Former state Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald raised $257,343 in the quarter. She had $574,592 on hand.

Will Shafroth, a one-time executive director of the Colorado Conservation Trust, raised $279,810 and had $682,090 on hand.
