One thing that is guaranteed at any show by Denver band : You’re going to have a good time. In some cases, such as mine on Friday night at the , you may have too much of a good time.
The bluesy rock band took the stage fairly late on Friday. They followed a reading by Charly “City Mouse” Fasano from his recently released book as well as performances by Scooter James and King For a Day. Despite the late hour, the bar remained at least half-full -– a true testament to the kind of fan base this band has built over the years.
And itap easy to understand the appeal of the Knew. Before they get on stage, itap hard to pick them out from the crowd — besides the fact that they must be the tallest band in Denver. They’re that unassuming. These four musicians don’t have skinny jeans and rockstar attitudes. They’re just like you and me, and that’s pretty refreshing to see.
As for the music –- the real reason bands have fans -– itap plain and simple fun. Itap hard to be in a room with the Knew playing and not feel a sort of blissful rush of feelings that make your body start moving in some way, even if itap just a secret toe-tap at the start of each of their songs.
The group has grown a lot over the past year, and with the addition of Tim Rynders on bass, their sound is more full and complete than in the past. The set Friday night was a mix of songs both familiar and unfamiliar to the crowd. Since the quartet is in the process of recording a new album, I’d wager that itap just a matter of time before those unfamiliar tunes are audience favorites.
Since it was late and I had drank one too many cheap drinks, I took my leave from the show a little early, jumping on my bicycle and peddling towards home. And as I left, I heard something that I hadn’t heard previously from the Knew -– a cover song. It was “Dammit” by blink-182, a strange ending, but nevertheless fun. Just as the Knew’s shows always are.
