The University of Denver women’s tennis team will play Long Beach State at the NCAA championships. Berths and pairings were announced Tuesday.
The Pioneers (22-2), who earned an automatic tournament berth as champions of the Sun Belt Conference, meet Long Beach State (19-6) in the UCLA Regional in Los Angeles on May 9.
• The DU men’s tennis team (18-6) will play Oklahoma State (16-9) in the first round of the NCAA championships at the Tulsa (Okla.) Regional on May 9.
The Pioneers, who received an at-large bid, qualified for their first national tournament.
Wyoming coach resigns.
Steven Suder resigned as wrestling coach at Wyoming after 19 years on the job, athletic director Tom Burman announced.
Suder said he believes everything is in place for the Cowboys’ wrestling program to return to the top 15 national rankings.
Suder coached Wyoming to Western Athletic Conference team titles in 1990 and 1992 and received NCAA West Regional coach of the year honors in 2001 and 2004. Suder’s dual record as Wyoming’s coach was 127-136-2. He was an All-America wrestler for Wyoming as a senior in 1979.
Burman said Wyoming assistant Ben VomBaur would serve as the team’s interim head coach. The athletic director said no timetable has been set for selecting Suder’s successor.
Central Park awaits Ritzenhein.
Former University of Colorado star and U.S. Olympian Dathan Ritzenhein will return to the roads of Central Park to defend his title in the Healthy Kidney 10K on May 17.
The New York Road Runners club announced his return Tuesday. Others in the field include 2006 New York City Marathon winner Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil and 2007 IAAF World Half-Marathon Championships silver medalist Patrick Makau of Kenya.
“This race is becoming one of the best 10K road races in the country, and I look forward to defending my title this year,” Ritzenhein said.
CU coach starting tour in Pueblo.
Colorado football coach Dan Hawkins will be touring the state to promote the CU program and to speak to elementary and middle-school students.
Hawkins will be at Sierra Vista Elementary in Pueblo at 10 a.m. today. He also will make “Hawk Talk Tour” stops in Fort Morgan on Tuesday and Sterling on May 12. The coach also plans to visit Glenwood Springs and possibly three other Colorado towns.
