Who: Mike and Kathy Harper of Denver
Where: Basilica de Bom Jesus in Goa. Built in 1594, it houses the remains of Francis Xavier, Goa’s patron saint. This Baroque structure blends Corinthian, Doric, Ionic and composite styles in its three-tiered facade.
Best meal: Casa Goana on Baga Road. We ordered “sizzlers,” meat served on hot cast-iron skillets with rice and chips (fries). They came steaming-hot from the kitchen. There are numerous restaurants to choose from on Baga Road.
Best deal: The meals are very inexpensive. Also, the street and beach vendors sell everything from fruit to nuts and hand-carved items to sarongs, but make sure you bargain for the best price.
Best time to go: Winter, which is October through February. We were there in January, when temperatures were low to mid 80s.
Best travel tip: Hire a guide, or a local driver to serve as a guide, especially when sightseeing the historical and architectural sites.
