NEW YORK — Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez is going on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right quadriceps muscle.

Rodriguez joins catcher Jorge Posada on the DL. The Yankees are waiting for additional opinions on Posada’s ailing throwing shoulder before determining whether he needs surgery.

A three-time AL MVP, Rodriguez was sent for an MRI exam Tuesday that revealed a Grade 2 strain.

Footnotes.

Atlanta pitcher John Smoltz went on the 15-day DL with an ailing right shoulder, though the Braves were told he can get over the problem without surgery. The move was retroactive to Monday.

Meanwhile, left-hander Mike Hampton (pectoral muscle) is penciled in to start May 10 at Pittsburgh.

• Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Scott Kazmir is expected to start Sunday against the Boston Red Sox after missing more than a month with an elbow injury.

• Texas Rangers starter Jason Jennings left in the third inning against the Kansas City Royals because of an irritated ulnar nerve in his right arm.

Also, third baseman Hank Blalock went on the 15-day DL because of a tear in his left hamstring.

• The Philadelphia Phillies activated center fielder Shane Victorino (calf) and sent outfielder T.J. Bohn to Triple-A Lehigh Valley (Pa.).

• The Royals released Hideo Nomo, probably ending the right-hander’s big-league career.
