Some of Colorado’s brightest high school students joined the ranks of National Merit Scholars today.
Thirty-eight winners across the state were named by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. They win $2,500 college scholarships.
The students named today are among 2,500 winners nationwide, judged to have the strongest mix of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in college, from a pool of about 15,000 finalists in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Today’s announcement is the second in a series of four contests which by July will confer the title of Merit Scholar on about 8,200 finalists. Today’s scholarships are mostly sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The others are underwritten by corporations or colleges. The full program awards more than $36 million in college scholarships.
The winners were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who evaluated each finalist’s grades, the difficulty level of their classes, standardized test scores, leadership, participation in community and school activities, essay and personal recommendation.
