Residents in the town of Rye are under a mandatory boil-water order as a precaution after run-off overwhelmed a filtration system installed last year.

“This is not at all like what happened unfortunately in the town of Alamosa,” said Rye Mayor Tom Hol gerson. “There is no evidence of bacteria or anyone getting sick from this. There’s simply too much dirt from the runoff.”

Town trustees voted to put the old system back in place, but because it does not meet current safety standards, the state required the boil-water order, Holgerson said.

Officials do not know how long the order will be in place but are working with the state to fix the problem as quickly as possible.

Rye, south of Pueblo, has about 200 residents and two schools.
