NEW YORK — Struggling pitcher Ian Kennedy was sent to the minor leagues Sunday by the New York Yankees, who purchased Darrell Rasner’s contract from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The Yankees promised patience with their young pitchers this season, but Kennedy was optioned to Triple-A after going 0-2 with an 8.37 ERA in six games, including five starts.
“I was kind of surprised,” Kennedy said. “But it’s bound to happen if you don’t win, especially here.”
Cardinals demote Reyes
ST. LOUIS — Anthony Reyes was demoted to the minor leagues after sputtering in a relief role with a 5.27 ERA.
The 26-year-old Reyes, once considered the team’s top pitching prospect, will be a starter for Triple-A Memphis.
Footnotes.
The Tigers recalled Dontrelle Willis from his minor-league rehabilitation assignment, meaning the injured left-hander — who is recovering from a hyperextended right knee — will stay with the team for now instead of in Triple-A.
• Twins right-hander Scott Baker, who left the mound Saturday night against the Tigers after only 43 pitches, was set to have an MRI on his strained right groin muscle today.
• The Angels placed pitcher Dustin Moseley on the 15-day disabled list because of stiffness in his forearm and recalled Sean Rodriguez from Triple-A Salt Lake.
• Royals left-hander John Bale, already on the DL with a tight shoulder, broke his pitching hand punching a door at the team’s hotel Friday night.
• The Pirates picked up the contract of left-hander Sean Burnett from Triple-A Indianapolis, adding him to the bullpen as a short reliever.
