Avalanche defenseman Jordan Leopold has been selected to play for Team USA in the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships, a team official confirmed.

Leopold, hurt much of his first two seasons with the Avs, is a Minnesota native who won the Hobey Baker Award with the University of Minnesota.

The U.S. team advanced to the qualification round of the tournament with a 5-1 win over Slovenia on Sunday, and played a qualification round game today against Canada in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The tournament will continue until May 18 in Halifax and Quebec City, Quebec. A handful of other Avs players, including Ruslan Salei, Peter Budaj and Jaroslav Hlinka, are competing in the tournament.
