The Adams State men’s and women’s track and field teams swept the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference outdoor championships Tuesday at the Mountaineer Bowl in Gunnison. It was the fifth consecutive RMAC title for the Grizzlies’ women and the second straight for the Grizzlies’ men.
Adams State scored 246 points in women’s competition, 70 points more than runner-up Western State. Nebraska-Kearney (111 1/2), Chadron State (101) and Colorado Mines (94 1/2) rounded out the top five.
Grizzlies freshman Indira Spence, selected the female athlete of the year, won the 200-meter dash in 24.05 seconds and teammate Sherline Duncan was second (24.27). Spence also won the 100-meter hurdles (13.37), with teammate Carla Kay Mills (13.71) second, and she anchored Adams State’s victorious 400-meter relay team that won in 44.89 seconds.
Adams State scored 255 points in men’s competition, with Western State the runner-up at 158. Nebraska- Kearney (131 1/2), Chadron State (113 1/2) and Colorado Mines (106) completed the top five.
Aaron Braun, a junior from Rocky Mountain High School, was selected male athlete of the year after leading Adams State’s 1-2-3 sweep in the 1,500-meter run. His winning time of 3:52.59 topped teammates Brian Medigovich (3:55.25) and Ryan McNiff (3:57.85).
UCCS golfers control NCAA regional.
Led by Tyler Bishop’s 1-under-par 71, RMAC champion CU-Colorado Springs took over sole possession of first place in the team standings after two rounds of the NCAA Division II Northwest Regional in Petaluma, Calif.
The Mountain Lions’ two-round 584 total put them 11 strokes ahead of second-place Minnesota State. The teams were tied after the first round Monday.
Bishop’s 2-over 146 left the junior from Skyline High School tied for third behind Scott Crichton of Western New Mexico at 143 and Nebraska-Kearney’s Alex Farrell at 144. CSU-Pueblo’s David Duarte also was third at 146.
CU duo shines at CGA event.
University of Colorado teammates Michael Baird and Patrick Grady combined for a 36-hole 129 to win the Colorado Golf Association Four-Ball Championship at Legacy Ridge Golf Course and The Heritage at Westmoor.
Defending champions Matthew Brunk and David Johnson finished second at 132. Sean Forey and Jack Manzi won the senior division at 133.
