Avalanche defenseman Jordan Leopold has been selected to play for Team USA in the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships, a Team USA official confirmed.

Leopold, hurt much of his first two seasons with the Avs, is a Minnesota native who won the Hobey Baker Award with the University of Minnesota.

The U.S. team advanced to the qualification round of the tournament with a 5-1 victory over Slovenia on Sunday, and lost 5-4 to Canada in a qualification-round game Tuesday in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The tournament will continue until May 18 in Halifax and Quebec City.

A handful of other Avs, including Belarus’ Ruslan Salei, Slovakia’s Peter Budaj and the Czech Republic’s Jaroslav Hlinka, are competing in the tournament.
