The San Luis Valley is mourning the loss of a 31-year-old Marine from Monte Vista who died in Iraq last week.
Sgt. Glen Martinez was one of five Marines killed Friday when their Humvee hit a roadside bomb in Fallujah. He was deployed from Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Martinez’s wife, Melissa, also is a Marine sergeant serving in Fallujah. According to the Alamosa Valley Courier, they met while training at Camp Pendleton.
She will accompany her husband’s body to Monte Vista for services, which will be held Tuesday in the Monte Vista High School gymnasium. He will be buried in the town’s Colorado State Veterans Center.
Martinez was born in Alamosa and grew up in Monte Vista. He was quarterback of the high school football team and competed in the state wrestling tournament. He went on to play baseball at Ottawa University in Kansas before joining the Marine Corps, the Courier reported.
Martinez was on his second tour of duty in Iraq.
