Aaron Cook pitched in the World Series last fall. He needed just 74 pitches in a complete-game victory against San Diego last season. For a pitcher, Cook’s a pretty decent major-league hitter, getting four hits in 17 at-bats this season (.235).
But Cook’s never come close to doing what Faith Christian High’s Jobi Wall did Saturday in a Class 3A district game.
“That’s awesome. I’ve never heard of that at any level,” a wide-eyed Cook said today.
What Wall did was throw a perfect game and hit for the cycle in Faith Christian’s 18-0 victory over Coal Ridge, from New Castle. A senior right-hander, Wall struck out six batters and retired 15 in a row in the five-inning game. The left-handed hitter tripled, singled, doubled, then homered in only four innings.
“Shoot, I never even threw a no-hitter in high school, and I know I didn’t hit for the cycle because I never hit any home runs,” Cook said.
