Getting your player ready...

2334 Colorado 66, Estes Park, CO, 970-586-4543, .

Rates: Off-season $120-185, in-season $155-205. Seven cabins ranging from one-bedroom to three. Separate living and bedroom areas. On-site parking lot.

Stay here if you’re: a hiker. It’s one-tenth of a mile from Rocky Mountain National Park, but it’s also the most peaceful spot to sit on your deck or porch and just listen to the Big Thompson River. Fishing is allowed, but it’s catch and release. Bring your own rig and don’t forget the fishing license.

It’s close to: Estes Park (but not too close), Big Thompson River and Rocky Mountain National Park.

The rooms are: comfortable and cozy. Some with decks, three with hot tubs, two with gas fireplaces, a couple of outdoor grills and six firepits. Freshly baked muffins or coffee cake delivered to your door every morning except Sunday.

They put all of the money into: the cabins and landscaping. Most of the cabins have been recently spruced up and upgraded with quality beds, a couple of decks, hot tubs, fresh paint and fully stocked kitchens (plates, silverware, pots and pans, coffee pots, toaster, graters, etc.).

The bottom line: For a great getaway close to Denver that’s totally relaxing, near water, has gracious hostesses and massages available in your cabins, you can’t beat the River Spruce. The elk sometimes walk down the river bed at sundown right in front of the cabins, and we could see bears, chipmunks, mallards and hummingbirds. The place is also available for family reunions and retreats.
