Best meal: On the cruise ship. Roaming the streets of Barcelona is exciting; however, the price of a simple meal and drink is about $20, so plan a hearty breakfast and dine when you return to the ship.
Best deal: Consider a cruise to enjoy the ports of the Mediterranean. When you consider the cost of just a hotel and food in Europe, you will find a cruise a great value. Continue the value by exploring the port cities, with public transportation instead of shore excursions. Our best deal was the train to Rome and city buses for 24 hours for $12 each.
Best time to go: The weather in October was perfect. Not one rainy day, about 75 degrees, and the crowds were manageable. Do not go in the summer months; it is too hot and crowded.
Best travel tip: Meet the people. Even with limited language skills, a smile and pointing to a map will get you help in finding your way. Strike up a conversation with other cruise passengers. You might meet people from Scotland, South Africa and even Connecticut who will enrich your holiday and become new friends. Share a map of your state and collect e-mails so you can continue the friendship after you return home.
