DENVER—Fairview High School’s Carolyn Warren provided one of two upsets in the semifinal round Friday of the girls Class 5A state tennis championships at the Gates Tennis Center.

Warren stunned Ponderosa’s Erin Sanders, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 in one of two championship classification matches at No. 1 singles. The win unseated Sanders who was the defending champion.

Warren moves on to the finals to face Cherry Creek’s Caroline Schnell, who upset Poudre High School’s Natalie Dunn, 6-0, 6-1.

Dunn’s setback came a day after she defeated 2006 No. 1 singles champion Veronica Wojakowska.

Cherry Creek won five semifinal matches to take a 50-41 edge over second place Ponderosa in the team standings. Chatfield was third with 36 points.

Creek has won 11 consecutive state tennis titles.

Foul weather Thursday forced all 16 quarterfinal doubles matches to be delayed. During play Friday morning, Creek won all four of its quarterfinal doubles matches.

However, the Bruins lost one doubles match in the semifinals.
