Metro-area residents could find May’s flowers smothered with snow when they wake Tuesday.

Sunday’s sunny skies and 70-degree temperatures should stick around for part of today, according to the National Weather Service. But clouds will move into the area in the afternoon, bringing a chance of thunderstorms.

Rain and snow are likely in the late evening and overnight, with as much as 2 inches falling.

“The weather improves by Tuesday afternoon, but it is still going to be a cool day,” with highs in the upper 40s, said Weather Service meteorologist Kyle Fredin.

Another weather system might produce more rain and snow for the mountains and nearby plains later in the week, according to the Weather Service.
