BLACK HAWK — The airplane that crashed last week near Black Hawk went down because of mechanical problems in the engine, according to a preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board.

The crash killed the pilot, Barry Maggert, 53, of Carbondale, and seriously injured the passenger, Jonathan Holton, 23.

Holton told investigators the engine started sputtering as they passed over the Eagle County Airport at 16,000 feet. A short time after crossing over the Continental Divide, the aircraft began “nosing over” and finally crashed at 10,400 feet about 4 miles west of Black Hawk.
