The Rockies’ recent power outage was starting to look like a full-scale blackout. They entered Sunday’s game with just 28 homers. Only Barry Bonds-less San Francisco (26) had fewer in the National League. But the Rockies hit two off Twins starter Kevin Slowey. Clint Barmes bashed a solo shot in the third, ending Colorado’s drought of 42 consecutive innings without a homer. Todd Helton added a solo homer in the sixth. It was just the seventh game this season in which the Rockies have hit multiple home runs.
Oh, Canada.
Rockies starter Jeff Francis pitched to fellow Canadian, friend and teenage teammate Justin Morneau three times Sunday. Francis struck out Morneau in the first inning and got him to ground out to first base in the third. But Morneau struck back in the sixth, tomahawking a 3-2 pitch over the right-field fence for a two-run homer. “I got him out a couple of times, but he got me good in the sixth,” Francis said.
Beating the AL.
By taking two of three from the Twins this weekend, the Rockies improved their interleague record since 2006 to 23-13. That’s the best interleague record by an NL team during that span.
