SEATTLE — San Diego ace Jake Peavy (4-3, 2.91 ERA) will miss his scheduled start tonight against the St. Louis Cardinals with soreness in his pitching elbow. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner will visit with Padres team physicians this morning, trying to determine the root of the discomfort Peavy has experienced during his last three or four starts.

“It’s not like a normal soreness. That’s obviously the reason we’re missing the start . . . because it’s not normal,” Peavy said before Sunday’s interleague series finale in Seattle. “Your arm is sore all the time, but I do feel some of it in the elbow, (and) that’s always a cause for concern.”

Oswalt unsure of next start.

Houston manager Cecil Cooper said there was miscommunication about sending ace Roy Oswalt (4-4, 5.43) to pitch the seventh inning, which is when he left the game Saturday night with a hip injury against Texas.

Oswalt said he’s unsure about making his next scheduled start Thursday against Philadelphia.

“In two or three days I’ll throw a little bit and see how it feels,” he said. “I don’t know (about the next start). All I know is today I can’t pitch.”

Footnotes.

Alex Rodriguez remains on target to rejoin the New York Yankees on Tuesday. The third baseman, out since April 28 with a strained right quadriceps, hit a grand slam to center field during his 15 at-bats in a simulated game.

Jorge Posada’s recovery took a step forward as he caught Ian Kennedy’s bullpen session. Posada (right rotator cuff tendinitis) said he is shooting for a return the first of June or sooner.

• Hank Blalock (torn left hamstring) will move from third to first base for the Texas Rangers when he returns from the disabled list.

• The Cardinals dedicated Stan Musial Drive, renaming the street in front of Busch Stadium in honor of the franchise’s greatest player.

• Left-hander Matt Harrison threw a seven-inning no-hitter for the Rangers’ Double-A affiliate in Frisco, Texas, in a 2-0 win over the San Antonio Missions.
