The odds of making a hole-in-one on a par-4 hole are about a million-to-1, according to a 2004 story in Golf World magazine. Which makes Jason Dumler a one-in-a-million golf pro.
Dumler, the head pro at Vista Ridge Golf Course in Erie, was giving a tour to television station KCNC-4 when the group arrived at the 330-yard 17th hole, and he discussed the risk-reward strategy of the hole.
Asked whether there had been an ace on the hole, he said: “There has not been an ace on this hole, but the pin has been hit.”
As if on cue, Dumler took out his Nike Sumo 5000 driver and gave it a rip. The ball sailed about 270 yards before dropping to the ground and rolling toward the pin. The reporter — anchor Vic Lombardi — began to get excited. The group raced to the green and discovered the ball in the hole.
“I’m in shock,” a nearly speechless Dumler said after picking his first ace out of the hole.
Dumler, who graduated from Boulder High School, says he usually drives about 280-290 yards. How did he celebrate?
“I had a few drinks with my wife, kids and (course general manager) Matt (Schalk). Thank goodness for the bar not being very crowded,” he said.
