FORT COLLINS, COLO. — The top two administrators at Colorado State University’s veterinary teaching hospital have resigned, citing differences with university administrators over budget problems.
Hospital Director Dan Smeak says he quit after losing the support of school officials. Hospital Administrator Chris Grippo says he quit because CSU wanted to ignore lawmakers’ instructions for spending $1 million in state aid.
CSU Executive Vice President Tony Frank has declined to comment on the specifics of the departures.
CSU officials say the hospital faces a $1.3 million shortfall.
They say the shortfall was caused by fewer animals being taken to the hospital and a policy that diverted some state funding from the hospital into CSU’s general fund.
