The University of Denver women’s golf team is off to a good start at the NCAA championship, shooting a 5-over-par 293 to tie for fifth after Tuesday’s opening round. The Pioneers, seeded ninth in the 24-team field, are nine strokes behind leader Southern California, the only team to finish under par, at 4-under 284.

Sophomore Stephanie Sherlock led the way for DU on the University of New Mexico Championship Course in Albuquerque, firing a 1-under 71, good for a ninth-place tie. DU’s Chelsea Benton (Highlands Ranch High School) was one stroke back at 72 in a tie for 15th. Nannette Hill of Wake Forest is leading the chase for individual champion at 5-under 67, a course record that has her two strokes ahead of five players tied for second.
