ENGLEWOOD, Colo.—Amanda Collins scored in the 77th minute Tuesday evening as Grandview posted three unanswered goals to win its first girls Class 5A state soccer championship with a 3-2 victory over Heritage.
Collins controlled the ball at the top of the 18-yard box, used a couple of nifty moves to juke two defenders and left-footed a hard shot past Heritage keeper Kari Spicer.
Top-seeded Grandview (18-1-1), from Aurora, got off to a slow start, falling behind Heritage (16-1-3) 2-0 on goals by midfielders Katy Oehring in the 11th minute and Taylor Nicholls in the 14th minute.
Thirteen seconds after Nicholls’ goal, Grandview senior striker Regina Thomas split two defenders and scored to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Wolves tied the game in the 24th minute on a goal by Brittany Dunn, who had just entered the contest.
The game was tied 2-2 at the intermission, and the teams played a back-and-forth contest for most of the second half.
Heritage, the No. 2 seed from Littleton, didn’t have any serious scoring chances the rest of the game.
Danica Hansen had four saves for Grandview, while Spicer stopped two shots.
The Eagles had six corner kicks to four for Grandview.
