J.P. Testwuide is pioneering the Pioneers.
The Vail native was named captain of the University of Denver hockey team Tuesday, becoming the first Coloradan to don the “C” in the 60-year history of the tradition-rich program.
“First of all, it’s an honor,” said the senior-to-be. “I didn’t realize I was the first (Coloradan) until (Monday). I was like, ‘Wow.’ ”
Testwuide, son of former Vail Associates chief operating officer Paul Testwuide, is a walk-on with a unique rivalry with Colorado College, DU’s archrival. His younger brother, Mike, will be a junior forward and assistant captain this fall.
“It’s definitely going to increase the rivalry between us two,” J.P. said.
The brothers were teammates in junior-A before college. They both just wanted to play at one of the Division I powers and are believed to be the only brothers to play on different sides of the DU-CC rivalry at the same time.
During that time, the Tigers are 6-1-1 against the Pioneers. Said J.P., “I definitely want to turn that around.”
