Goose Gossage was one of the most intimidating pitchers of his time, but he said last week that he intentionally hit batters with a pitch only three times. The batters were Ron Gant, Al Bumbry and Andres Galarraga. “They had it coming,” Gossage said. In 1988, when Gossage played for the Cubs, manager Don Zimmer warned his pitching staff not to let the “Big Cat” beat them. Galarraga came to bat against Gossage in the eighth inning. “I’m thinking back to the meeting before the game,” Gossage said with a grin. “I was in my delivery when I thought, ‘I’m not taking any chances.’ Boom! I saved four pitches and drilled him as good as I can drill them. Right in the rib cage. You could hear the air go out. It was beautiful.”
