They will have a Darrent Williams Day in Fort Worth, Texas. They will unveil a Darrent Williams statue today in Montbello.

The lovable former Broncos cornerback may be gone, but just try to forget him.

“I’m proud of what’s come out of this situation,” said Domonique Foxworth, a Broncos cornerback and one of Williams’ closest friends. “It’s tremendous to think that what’s become of Darrent’s life was much more positive than one negative event.”

Williams was slain Jan. 1, 2007. His statue will be presented today at his new memorial teen center, with the official grand opening May 29. Meanwhile, his hometown of Fort Worth has proclaimed June 14 as Darrent Williams Day. The event will begin the previous Friday night with a gala and silent auction to raise money for the newly formed Darrent Williams Foundation that will benefit underprivileged children. Then there is a Saturday parade, a proclamation of Darrent Williams Day by Fort Worth officials and a festival.

In a letter sent to NFL teams, Rosalind Williams, Darrent’s mother, said she stumbled upon one of her son’s notebooks. Listed were goals he had set for helping the community, including sports and arts facilities for inner-city youth, football camps and back-to-school drives.

To help raise funds for her son’s foundation, Rosalind is asking players to donate one piece of sports memorabilia for the silent auction.
