Longtime Avalanche sportscaster Mike Haynes, who missed the team’s playoff run after having surgery for a brain aneurysm, will recover well enough to return to the play-by-play booth, the team’s broadcast company said Wednesday.

Haynes had surgery April 10 to remove a threatening Basilar artery aneurysm, a bulge in one of the brain’s main blood-delivery paths.

Haynes’ spirited and often loud calls during radio and television broadcasts have become a staple for Avs fans since the team moved to Denver in 1995.

Haynes will help host an Avalanche year-in-review show on Altitude on June 16. He will return to full play-by-play duties next season, Altitude said.

Former Avs television announcer John Kelly — known for his calls of “Thank you, thank you, thank you!” after Avs goals — took over during Haynes’ absence. Kelly will return to the St. Louis Blues as television play-caller next season.
