HealthOne broke ground Wednesday on the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children on the east side of Presbyterian/St. Luke’s campus at 1719 E. 19th Ave.

The $113 million, 100,000-square- foot project will shift newborn and pediatric care to one facility.

Included in the new hospital will be a 22-bed emergency department and an 84-bed neonatal intensive- care unit, which HealthOne says will be the largest in Colorado. The hospital will have a capacity of 170 beds.

In addition to the hospital, P/SL will add a four-story medical office building to the campus. The building will include an ambulatory surgery center.

While the hospital and the name are new, the pediatric unit started in 1977 when the University of Colorado School of Medicine had an obstetrical residency program at St. Luke’s. Since then, the team has expanded from 10 physicians to more than 300 affiliated physicians.

Completion of the hospital is expected in the spring of 2010. The Denver Post
