Rockies general manager Dan O’Dowd said today that he has no plans to trade for sluggers.
The answers must come from within the current roster or the farm system as the Rockies try to ramp up a disappointing offense.
In Tuesday’s loss to San Francisco, Colorado went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position, leaving them with a .232 average in those situations this season.
“You have to believe it’s going to change,” third baseman Garrett Atkins said.
Manager Clint Hurdle did alter his lineup for today’s series finale as a concession to left-hander Jonathan Sanchez.
Chris Iannetta and Jeff Baker, who both have hit Sanchez well, are starting. And Ryan Spilborghs is back in right field for Brad Hawpe, who suffered a right hamstring cramp last night. Hawpe is fine, but Hurdle said it was an obvious decision to let Hawpe rest as a precaution given his numbers against left-handers (.200 average).
The Rockies will try to win consecutive series for the first time since April 15-19 at San Diego and Houston. A look at the lineup as Ubaldo Jimenez goes for just his second victory this season. The Rockies are a shocking 1-8 in his starts this year:
