Rockies shortstop Omar Quintanilla and second baseman Jonathan Herrera don’t have much pop in their bats, but their gloves are golden.
The two Triple-A call-ups proved that again Sunday, helping Aaron Cook notch a complete-game victory that included 16 groundball outs.
In the fifth, Quintanilla gobbled up three grounders in succession. In the sixth, Herrera made a gorgeous throw to Quintanilla for a force at second base.
“Those guys can pick it,” first baseman Todd Helton said. “When you have a guy like Aaron pitching, it’s great to have guys with gloves like theirs.”
Lucky seven.
The seven combined hits by the Mets and Rockies tied for the fewest ever in a game at Coors Field. The other time was July 17, 2004, against San Francisco. The Rockies had four hits in that game, the Giants three, and the Giants won 4-0.
Helton belts one.
Helton’s double to lead off the sixth inning was his first extra-base hit since hitting a home run May 18 against the Twins. Of Helton’s last 29 hits, 24 have been singles.
